Project Objectives

The Alberta Zero Emissions Truck Electrification Collaboration (AZETEC) project will develop and demonstrate a hydrogen fueling station for highway capable, heavy-duty commercial fleet vehicles. The hydrogen station will operate in a completely integrated system in real world conditions.

AZETEC will validate the design, manufacture, and operation of two long-range fuel cell electric trucks and the supporting hydrogen fueling infrastructure for operation between Calgary and Edmonton Alberta.

Elements tested will include the performance requirements of hydrogen fuel gas for heavy duty trucks, the fueling infrastructure in climates that range from -30°C to +30°C, the ability of the infrastructure to provide SAE J2719 purity hydrogen, re-fueling within 20-45 minutes, while enabling safe and reliable operation and management of the hydrogen fueling station for daily fueling.

Expected Results

Hydrogen fueling infrastructure is a key component in a transition towards a future ‘Made in Canada’ hydrogen economy that leverages the nation’s ability to produce cost-effective, low carbon hydrogen.

The heavy-duty freight transportation sector is one of Canada’s largest contributors of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. By demonstrating hydrogen heavy-duty trucks and hydrogen infrastructure, the AZETEC project can pave the way towards broader decarbonisation in the sector. The investment in hydrogen fueling infrastructure will also create new employment opportunities for Canadians including positions in manufacturing, installation, service maintenance, product delivery and hydrogen storage.
